Weather shocks and migration in South Asia: Evidence from Bangladesh

Abstract

What weather shock drives migration in Bangladesh? A recent household survey from Bangladesh sheds light on identifying the effect of climatic anomalies on the likelihood of migration and in particular, internal migration. Combining migration with climatic data, this paper analyzes the direct impact of weather shocks on household members' probability to migrate internally. The main findings confirm that an additional weather shock increases the probability of migration by 9.74 percent, on average, 24 months after the additional shock occured. However, this effect is increasing when poor households respond more than wealthier households, when controlling for income. Also, households that receive remittances except home is significant and positive, in the presence of an additional SPEI shock, identifying a potential adaptation strategy mechanism. The results are robust for internal migration and significantly positive for rural-to-rural and urban-to-urban migration.
