Dollar canadien et prix du pétrole : quelle causalité ?

Abstract

L'objectif de cette étude est d'analyser les liens entre le prix réel du pétrole et le taux de change effectif réel du dollar canadien. En recourant aux techniques de cointégration, nous montrons qu'il existe une relation stable de long terme entre les séries et que le taux de change canadien est caractérisé par un processus de retour à son niveau d'équilibre. À court terme, la variation du taux de change canadien est positivement déterminée par sa valeur retardée d'une période et par le taux de croissance du prix du pétrole. L'application des tests de causalité au sens de Granger nous conduit à identifier une relation causale du taux de change vers le prix du pétrole (la réciproque n'est pas vérifiée). Une appréciation du taux de change canadien engendre une hausse de la demande relative pour le pétrole (le prix du pétrole produit au Canada étant relativement plus cher) générant à son tour une pression à la hausse sur son prix.
