Abstract

International comparisons of military expenditure are unreliable. Between the different sources of statistical information, even for developed democratic countries, the information remains imprecise, due to the definition of military expenditure itself, the difficult determination of military price indices, and exchange rates that are unsuitable for providing meaningful stable data. Under these conditions, the application of the purchasing power method undoubtedly offers the possibility of better understanding the economic effort made by each country for its own national security and that of its allies. However, these estimates do not provide an accurate comparison of a country's military strength, which depends on its armaments industry, its strategy and the actual quality of the armaments engaged in the various possible theatres of operation.
