Germany – A Fertile Ground For The Development Of Hidden Champions

Abstract

Hidden Champions are small and medium-sized companies, leaders in their global markets and unknown to the public. Analyzing the geographical dispersion of Hidden Champions around the world, it is surprising that almost half of the population of these highly performant companies is geographically concentrated in Germany. The German ecosystem seems to be more favorable to entrepreneurship and the development of Hidden Champions than the one of other countries. This is due to pre-existing traditional skills, decentralization of the state, its dual apprenticeship training system, business cooperation with the research institutions and the international openness of the country. In addition to this, these firms can count on a special efficient SME-friendly banking system and an economic and political environment considering SMEs as an essential element of the success of the German economy. These companies can benefit from a substantial pragmatic support from the German government and the Länder (federal states) in the areas of innovation, internationalization, administrative support and business creation. Considering this, the German entrepreneurial culture combined with the German economic ecosystem seems to be more favorable to the advent and durability of Hidden Champions.
