Abstract

L'objet de cet article est de dégager les principales caractéristiques d'un échantillon de compagnies pétrolières indépendantes américaines : Anadarko Petroleum, Occidental Petroleum, Marathon Oil, Unocal, Burlington Resources, Amerada Hess, Apache, Kerr- McGee, Devon Energy, Valero Energy. Il s'agit de sociétés essentiellement actives en amont, dont la dimension gazière est parfois très forte, supérieure en valeur relative à celle des majors. Ces groupes connaissent une internationalisation en croissance, généralement focalisée sur quelques zones clés. Comme les majors, ils ont adopté une stratégie de croissance externe dynamique, conduisant à des augmentations de taille significative. L'analyse de leurs activités montre que ces compagnies sont des acteurs à part entière, exerçant la fonction d'opérateur dans de nombreux cas et faisant appel aux technologies de pointe. Peu de ces compagnies sont intégrées, et l'existence d'indépendants de grande taille en aval est possible, mais rare. Les résultats financiers des années 2000 et 2001 ont été exceptionnellement bons, tandis que ceux de l'année 2002 s'annoncent en retrait, en raison en particulier de la faiblesse des prix du gaz aux États-Unis
