Abstract

Avec Berliet on aborde l'histoire d'une société industrielle et commerciale qui a été un des fleurons de l'économie lyonnaise au XXe siècle et on retrouve le mythe fondateur de bon nombre d'entreprises qui ont commencé modestement, pour parvenir ensuite à dominer un secteur. L'histoire initiale de la famille et de l'entreprise correspond bien au foisonnement d'ateliers automobiles du carrefour lyonnais qui se lancent dans la décennie 1890 : Rochet-Schneider, Luc Court, François Pilain, Marius Patay, Audibert et Lavirotte… Mais ces entrepreneurs qui, à la fin du XIXe siècle, se risquent dans l'aventure automobile se recrutent peu dans la ville de Lyon elle-même. Au contraire, nombre de futurs dirigeants viennent de zones proches, des départements voisins de celui du Rhône où, à la fin du XIXe siècle, l'amélioration des communications, jointe aux difficultés de l'agriculture, augmente le nombre de candidats à l'exode rural. Berliet ne fait pas exception, tant s'en faut.
