Abstract

La particularité essentielle de l'activité d'un soldat dans une compagnie de combat est de risquer sa vie et peut-être d'avoir à donner la mort, tout dépendra en grande partie du contexte socio-politique et de l'environnement humain dans lequel l'"opération extérieure" sera réalisée. L'analyse de l'activité de "soldats de la paix" en opération extérieure en Ex-Yougoslavie montre que les situations changent rapidement et que l'adage institutionnel "c'est le terrain qui commande" est omniprésent ; ce qui empêche toute prédictibilité et anticipation durable et limite la portée des modélisations. Cette recherche a eu pour objectif d'apporter des éléments de réponses à diverses questions que posent les opérations de maintien de la paix : De quoi est faite l'activité en situation au quotidien ? Comment est-elle programmée et organisée ? Dans quelles conditions est-elle réalisée ? Les soldats y sont-ils préparés ? A quelles difficultés sont-ils confrontés ? En quoi ces nouvelles formes d'engagement comportent-elles des paradoxes, voire des contradictions entre programme et contingence ? Et au-delà ces questions, de façon plus générale, en quoi et malgré ses spécificités l'activité d'un soldat en opération peut être analysée comme une "activité de travail" ?
