Abstract

More communication between individuals leads to better performance in organizations. At least, that is what we have always assumed. Thus, new and faster technologies of communication – Intranet and the Internet – have become the norm in our companies. However, many analysts and authors – among them Vastel, Saramago and Barber (1999) – are beginning to wonder if we may have gone too far. Can these new technologies constitute a source of stress and oppression for the employee, in some cases even becoming an impediment to efficient communication ? To fight against this sort of oppression, workers are increasingly feeling the need to « rebuild the human side » (Roche, 1997 and Sadowsky,1999) of the system. Rather than fight this desire to add a more personal touch, today's manager must learn to encourage it, realizing that human contact can make workers more productive and efficient
