Abstract

Ten years of sustainable development, from Rio 1992 to Johannesburg 2002, delivered overall negative results for both the global environment and the capability of the international community to tackle global development problems. But the balance sheet is contrasted. Ambiguously, standing back states led business and NGOs take the lead. Exposed to radical attacks, sustainable development is also caught in various strategies to scale-down the priority of environmental issues and restore as well a scientistic approach of public decision making as an ideology of the univocally goodness of new technologies.
