Abstract

Още преди икономиката да стане наука, някъде около 1776 г., годината, в която е публикуван трудът на шотландеца Адам Смит „Из-следване върху природата и причините за богатството на нациите"2, населе-нието участва като елемент в разсъжденията на т. нар. „пред-икономисти". По-късно т. нар. „класическа" икономическа доктрина е последвана от ана-лиза на Томас Роберт Малтус, чиято значимост е съществена, тъй като практи-чески всички по-нататъшни автори ще трябва да се самоопределят повече или по-малко във връзка с отношението им към неговия „принцип на населението". Така, през ХIХ век разграничаваме две групи автори – малтусианци и анти-малтусианци; сред вторите са Карл Маркс и Фридрих Енгелс. Тази дебат про-дължава и през ХХ век, като в същото време се появява и трети подход, свързан с математическата демография.
