Abstract

The anthropology of value starts from the principle that it is the exchange between people (marked as much, if not more, by processes of power and ideological manipulation as by the need linked to scarcity) that determines value and not the other way around. His aim is to demonstrate this. Exchanges, which are the result of socio-political relations, can take various forms (gift, barter or market exchange, with or without payment). They take the form of transfers of goods or money or the opening of a credit line. Depending on the case, the credit line is simply recorded in the memory or in a bank account. It is important to emphasise the importance of debt (or its opposite, credit) which, by establishing obligations between the parties, has always been one of the main forms of exchange. Political relations between men determine both the terms of exchange and the value of the goods exchanged, i.e. their desirability, generally expressed in monetary terms.
