Abstract

This essay aims to identify and characterize what we call the creative economy paradigm. We argue that understanding the structural changes that have occurred since the late 1980s requires taking into account the role played by creativity in the economic regime commonly referred to as the "knowledge and innovation economy." We outline the characteristics of this paradigm marked by the convergence between creativity, artistic activities, the economy, and technology, by the institutionalization of the cultural and creative industries (CCIs), and by the emphasis on entrepreneurship. Two themes are then developed in particular to account for creativity in this paradigm: that of the theory of action based on pragmatist philosophy to account for entrepreneurial creativity; and that of the typical market structures of CCIs structuring the dynamics of creativity in these sectors. The ambivalences of this paradigm are also evoked.
