Abstract

In France, liberalism is not a well-known philosophy. However, liberalism is of real significance if its political and economic dimensions are considered together to deal with the question of social justice. At the end of the 20th century, each in their own way, F. Hayek and J. Rawls achieve this integration successfully. With both as benchmarks, the outline of a socially sustainable liberalism is based on the dispersion as large as possible of the political and economic powers. Three major lines of policy are to be preferred: freedom to choose to work, enhancement of people's capabilities and universal basic income. In each case, the philosophical framework and the public policies are also inspired by other authors, A. Sen and P. Van Parijs mainly. That liberalism has also to overcome other tests of sustainability (concentration of capital, technological challenges, ecological emergency, disjointed relations between sovereign States). The answers given in the book aim at reflecting how much fruitful the field of interdisciplinarity between philosophy and economics can be.
