Quand les prix cessent d'être élastiques

Abstract

L'élasticité prix est une notion fondamentale dans toute analyse économique. Elle relie, par exemple, les variations de part de marché aux variations de prix relatif entre les concurrents. Souvent, on se contente pour l'analyse, d'une élasticité constante ou faiblement variante. Nous allons montrer que cette notion est parfois trop simple pour refléter toute la complexité du comportement de certains marchés. Ceux-ci présentent la particularité de faire référence à eux-mêmes : c'est l'auto-référence. Dans cet article, après avoir présenté la modélisation classique de la part de marché, nous définissons le concept d'auto-référence et en déduisons des conséquences relatives aux réponses du marché face à des changement de prix. Un exemple nous servira de fil rouge. Il s'agit du marché des téléphones mobiles numériques. En 1994, deux acteurs se partagent le marché : France Télécom (avec Itinéris et Bibop) et SFR.
