Abstract

Deux grands distributeurs ont fait la une de la presse spécialisée des derniers mois, Wal -Mart et Carrefour-Promodès. Les derniers classements les situent à présent comme respectivement numéro un et numéro deux mondiaux en terme de volume de chiffre d'affaires et d'emplois (tableau 1). L'irrésistible ascension de ces deux géants vient apporter une illustration brillante à la thèse du défi mondial du bas prix (2), dont ils ont été et sont des apôtres permanents ; elle est aussi le symbole de la globalisation du champ de bataille concurrentiel dans un domaine où les acteurs se sont, plus longtemps que dans l'industrie, affrontés à un niveau local.
