Abstract

Mythe ou réalité ? Cela fait plusieurs dizaines d'années que nous entendons parler des ponts terrestres nord-américains acheminant rapidement les conteneurs en transit de la côte Ouest à la côte Est du continent, et vice-versa, en correspondance avec les navires transocéaniques. S'agit-il vraiment de routes concurrentes de celle du canal de Panama ? Pour tenter une réponse à cette question, il convient d'examiner d'abord dans quel contexte l'idée a surgi, puis de voir comment elle s'est développée en Amérique du Nord, pour aboutir à une typologie des ponts terrestres proposée par des géographes nord-américains, enfin, de proposer une évaluation de la situation actuelle.
