Abstract

One of the most significant characteristics of capitalism in Brazil is the powerful role played by the government. Economic development has been closely linked to the creation of a series of state agencies and institutions designed to guide the process. In fact, the construction of the contemporary Brazilian state reflects the evolution of development strategies, with each new grand project, whether national industrialization or global economic integration, requiring specific institutional reforms to the entire public infrastructure.
