Abstract

This paper analyses the different stages in the evolution process of the theory of periodical commercial crises of Clément Juglar (1819-1905), from his earlier publications, shortly before 1860, until his last contributions almost forty years later. The analytical and empirical progresses are emphasized, and the paper identifies the general vision of the cycles Juglar developed. At the end of his life, he identified that regular phenomenon as the "key of the whole social movement". Economic, political, moral, but above all religious arguments allow us to assess that evolution of Juglar's work. The article points out more specifically the importance of Jansenism for the economic analysis of the so-called "prophet of the crises".
