Abstract

This article aims at highlighting the acamedic and cultural context of Sen's contribution to social choice theory. The focus is on his first influences. We seek to understand the originality of his contributions, particularly concerning his methodological and ethical orientations. It is for instance remarkable that, despite a neoclassical research program, two major influences have been Maurice Dobb and Amiya Dasgupta. Moreover, Sen's world vision has been inheritated from Rabindranath Tagore. Our perspective explains why, basically, his contribution to normative economics can't be considered as a simple variation on neoclassical economics and why it ends up distancing totally from the Arrowian framework.
