La puissance symbolique des signes monétaires : le cas du dollar en Equateur

Abstract

Cette étude s'intéresse au processus de substitution du dollar américain au sucre lors du passage à la dollarisation officielle et intégrale de l'Equateur. Elle s'arrête sur les justifications de la dollarisation, avant d'évaluer la légitimité de la dollarisation et du dollar américain au yeux d'une population partagée entre partisans et opposants à la dollarisation. Elle souligne ensuite la puissance symbolique que peuvent contenir les signes monétaires, en mobilisant la théorie institutionnaliste de la confiance dans la monnaie. Il est montré comment l'ambiguïté de certains symboles reproduits sur les pièces de un dollar américain a favorisé la pénétration du dollar dans les circuits monétaires quechuas, sans toutefois instaurer une légitimité complète de la dollarisation.
