Abstract

One of the criteria often used to characterize the Social Economy and to differentiate it from the other types of organizations is its administrative functioning, then classify as belonging to the realm of "economic democracy". This article aims to clarify the historical evolution of the "democratic" rules allowed within the social economy: the debate between labor-management and co-operation of the 19th leaves place at the 20th century with a consensus around an economic democracy conceived then as the combination of the rules "equality between the members" and "double quality". The evolution of the "old" organizations and the emergence of new ones lead to a reformulation of this debate by the introduction of new practices (multi-stakeholdership, "capitalist" rules and logic...).
