Abstract

L'objet de cet article est de rendre compte de l'intérêt que les économistes français du XIXe siècle ont porté au mot « richesse ». Pris dans son sens « scientifique », le mot « richesse » a donné lieu à de vives controverses (Ière partie) Entendu dans son second sens, c'est-à-dire comme la « richesse de la France » ou celle des Français, il a soulevé les problèmes d'évaluation, qui susciteront après 1870 un intérêt croissant de la part de ces économistes (IIe partie). Avec la création d'un impôt sur le revenu en France en 1916 et la multiplication et l'amélioration des statistiques fiscales qui en résulteront, les études sur la « richesse seront progressivement délaissées au profit de celles sur les "revenus des Français".
