Les rachats d'action au Canada : motivations et cycles économiques

Abstract

Cette étude empirique a pour objet d'évaluer les motivations du rachat d'actions au cours des années 1990 et par cycles économiques pour les firmes cotées sur le marché canadien (Toronto Stock Exchange). Les résultats montrent, sur un échantillon de 517 annonces de rachat sur la période 1990-1999, que la distribution des flux monétaires excédentaires (FME) ainsi que la prévention de la dilution du bénéfice par action (encourue par les plans d'options d'achat d'actions pour les employés) sont les principales motivations qui expliquent le mieux la probabilité de rachat à la fin des années 1990 au Canada. Toutefois, au début des années 1990 les firmes semblent plutôt racheter des actions sous-évaluées. Ce résultat tend à montrer que les motivations des politiques de rachat d'actions évoluent selon les cycles économiques.
