La Chine, un hégémon régional en Asie Orientale ? Une approche d'Economie Politique Internationale

Abstract

The China's rapid expansion in manufacturing production and international trade notably results from its regional insertion. Since 1990, China has taking part in the regional sharing of labour: it assembles products imported from Japan and new industrialised countries and exports them on the American, Japanese and European markets, thus becoming "a regional re-export platform". With this new status, some questions about the Chinese supremacy in East Asia arise. Has China become a regional leader? Does China have the capacities to fulfil this function? The concept of Hegemony, proposed by the International Political Economy, will be used to answer these questions. We will use it in order to evaluate Chinese power. Japan, the other major economy in East Asia, cannot be excluded from this analysis. Through a review of several criteria, we draw a comparison of both countries' position, which leads to a conclusion that currently neither China nor Japan can be defined as a 'Regional Hegemon', at least in the short term.
