Abstract
The economic valuation of the local effects of air pollution. - The objective of this work is to provide an overview of economic valuation methods concerning local air pollution effects. Two main issues are addressed:1) The scientific issue: what is estimated, how and why? The main research from the nineties is presented here. Two key issues are stressed: diversity of the assessment methods on the one hand, and the debate on how to take long term impacts into account including the discount techniques, on the other.2) The political issue: which institutional processes will help establish official values derived from the values given by the scientific community and which provide a basis for public decision making? The practices in different European countries (mainly France, Sweden and Switzerland) are studies here.
