Abstract

A l'aide d'apports d'historiens, de géographes, d'économistes et de sociologues, une première partie vise à fournir une lecture de l'importance que chacune de ces disciplines accorde aux PME et aux systèmes industriels locaux dans les évolutions industrielles enregistrées en France depuis le XIXème siècle.Reprenant l'examen de la situation italienne – et entre autres de l'émergence, depuis la fin de la deuxième guerre mondiale, des « districts industriels » dela « troisième Italie » - une deuxième partie développe une analyse critique de ce type de phénomène trop souvent érigé en « modèle » ; l'étude de la situation italienne permet de ce fait de mieux prendre conscience des différences observées avec la situation française.A partir enfin d'un échantillon d'analyses de systèmes industriels locaux étudiés en France, la dernière partie vise à opérer une sorte d'inventaire pratique des divers types d'approche qui ont pu être développés en France pour rendre compte de la complexité des évolutions enregistrées : il s'agit là d'une sorte de méthodologie en acte des diverses dimensions à prendre en compte lorsque l'on entend rendre compte du fonctionnement des systèmes d'activité jusque dans leur dimension locale ; ce qui ne semble pas sans incidence pour établir ce que l'on pourrait appeler une sociologie de l'économique qui semble aujourd'hui par trop faire défaut.
