Abstract

For a long time, central banks have been marked by a low female presence. However, the past decade has seen a rapid increase in women's representation, largely driven by a catch-up effect. Yet, the continuation of this trend deserves closer examination. The evolution of women's share in new central bank governor appointments highlights an uneven progression. This article analyzes this trajectory, identifies potential barriers to further progress, and explores the levers to reinvigorate momentum toward better female representation, including within governance bodies. To shed light on these issues, we conducted interviews with three central bankers who have held or currently hold leadership positions in institutions across three different geographical regions.
