Abstract

This paper employs a historical methodology within a neo-institutional framework to examine whether deinstitutionalization creates strategic opportunities for pivotal actors in business ecosystems. Focusing on the French art ecosystem (1816 – present), it reveals how pivotal actors adjust their strategies during institutional change to assert agency. Two approaches emerge: after periods of institutional control, actors adopt reactive strategies by voicing grievances and developing alternatives, while heightened constraints or risks prompt proactive strategies through critiques and counter-power actions. Additionally, it highlights that pivotal actors' institutional strategies function as cognitive governance mechanisms, shaping institutional and cognitive dynamics. The study emphasizes the ambivalence of the current French art ecosystem, where legitimization mechanisms span public and private spheres, bridging artistic and financial domains. By emphasizing the strategic dimensions of deinstitutionalization, this research offers theoretical insights and practical guidance for navigating and leveraging institutional change.
