Industry 4.0 and health sector: A systematic literature review and proposals

Abstract

The diffusion of Industry 4.0 technologies in the health sector has transformed care supply by addressing issues of cost, deadlines, objective assessments, and technicalities. On the demand side, it contributes to build personalized, preventive, predictive and participatory medicine. The aim of the paper is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the economic and managerial literature on the effects of the integration of Industry 4.0 technologies in the health sector. Using a quantitative method based on systematic review of the literature from 2011 to 2021, we highlight two main research topics: (i) the restructuring of health systems based on Industry 4.0 technologies and (ii) the impact of these technologies on major health-data issues. These results suggest that Industry 4.0 technologies complement information and communication technologies in the recent and deep transformations of the health sector. We specify these changes by proposing a dynamic mapping of health sector processes to provide an original and thorough framework to interpret how new and pre-existing technologies affect supply and delivery care. Specifically, we show that changes to healthcare professionals' practice and the role of patients, and new forms of collaboration among health system stakeholders, stem from the evolution towards a system that produces goods and services based on a set of both pre-existing and new technologies.
