Abstract

Célèbre chez les adeptes du recours à la psychologie aussi bien en sociologie qu'en économie (chez les économistes comportementaux en particulier), Jon Elster a cherché tout au long de sa carrière à mettre en cause le pouvoir explicatif de la Théorie économique du choix rationnel (TECR). Il a utilisé pour ce faire les apports d'auteurs toujours plus corrosifs. Il a fini même par expliquer que l'une des principales causes de l'échec de la TECR comme soubassement à des modèles explicatifs tenait à un mécanisme trop souvent passé sous silence : les hommes ont tendance à se duper eux-mêmes compte tenu de l'existence de besoins psychiques plus ou moins inconscients devant être satisfaits en sous-main. Mais Elster n'a jamais pu assumer toute la causticité de cette idée.
