Abstract

This article explores the republican critique of laissez-faire, articulated by the young Courcelle-Seneuil (1830-1840), through an examination of his ideas on sovereignty, state intervention in the economy, and solutions to the misery of the working class. It posits that his first pamphlet advocating for free banking, "Le crédit et la banque" (1840), should be interpreted as a response to the social question, aiming to promote the free association of producer-citizens through access to credit.
