Abstract

This paper questions whether and how the adoption of digital technologies helped firms cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, it investigates whether the adoption of coping strategies could have influenced firm resilience during the pandemic. Using data on 31,387 firms from 39 developing and developed economies, our results highlight that firms that used a website to communicate with clients and suppliers before the crisis showed higher absorption capacities than other firms during the crisis. The positive role of website use was through the adoption of coping strategies: home-delivery services, online sales or remote work. The effect of website was therefore particularly useful to cope with the COVID-19 crisis in developing countries and when stringency measures were severe.
