Abstract

In order to preserve the planet, it is necessary to know how to promote the adoption of pro- environmental behaviors. This research focuses on the role of flow state as a factor determining environmental concern (PPE) in the context of a virtual reality (VR) educational experience on climate disruption. In an exploratory approach, we conducted a qualitative study in the form of group interviews in which 16 groups, or 52 participants, were immersed in the virtualized Arctic seabed. The aim of this research was to find out whether people who had reached the state of flow during this immersive experience expressed more concern for the environment than those who had not (or only partially) reached this state. The results obtained enable us to characterize the dimensions of flow (cognitive distortion, temporal and enjoyment) and PPE (cognitive, affective and conative). They also lead to the conclusion that an immersive educational experience (in VR) can be a relevant means of raising awareness, and all the more effective when subjects reach the state of flow.
