Abstract

This communication examines whether and how meta-organizations may contribute to the creation and diffusion of a neocolonial global order. We focus particularly on the Mercosur, the EU, the EU-Mercosur agreement and the many meta-organizations that have attempted to create decision premises for this major trade agreement. Drawing on Latin American scholars' works, we explore mechanisms of social order creation, the strategic interplay between dominant and peripheral actors and highlight the ambivalent nature of meta-organizations as agents of coloniality or resistance. Thus, we show that meta-organizations can contribute to either reinforcing or contesting structures of dominance. In this sense, this research further invites to re-examine meta-organization theory by developing perspectives from the margins of the Global Souths and fostering a pluridiverse understanding of a just global order.
