Abstract

Air transport is partially responsible for the growth of tourism and represents a key factor in mass tourism and the overtourism outbreak. These phenomena have given birth to protest movements as tourismophobia and flight shame also known as flygskam, a Swedish word created in 2017. The aim of this chapter is to highlight the links between mass tourism and flight shame, and to explore how the COVID-19 health crisis is playing a catalytic role in the evolution of these phenomena. A qualitative study based on interviews with French air-transport experts and leaders of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) involved in the air-transport field highlights the drivers of change resulting from the pandemic and uncertainties regarding the future of world trades linked to tourism. The obtained results are used to suggest recommendations that ensure a sustainable postcrisis recovery for air-transport and tourism fields, taking into account the concerns previously highlighted by protest movements.
