Abstract

How did the changes in the French financial system in the 1980s reflect in the strategies, activities and balance sheets of the three national banks, and Société Générale in particular? By linking the micro- and macro-economic levels and crossing the archives of the regulator and the regulated, we show how this bank was confronted with and actively participated in the processes of deregulation (decompartmentalisation of banking and finance, dismantling of the credit control), financialisation (disintermediation, development of financial activities), internationalisation (development of international activities from metropolitan France and in a foreign network), and financial and technological innovations. These changes have led to an increase in financial risks and the emergence of new risks, while the bank's internal control system was weakened.
