Abstract

A l'image même de son titre, ce livre ne manque pas d'audace. Remontant aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles, il ne tend à rien moins que de présenter une « théorie complète de la décision » (Goyet, 2009, p. 9) à partir de l'étude des textes de l'époque. N'hésitons pas à dire qu'il y parvient. Le lecteur y retrouvera la tradition thomiste que le numéro précédent du Libellio a exposée (Dumez, 2024) comme il y verra une interprétation virtuose et saisissante du passage central du Discours de la Méthode de Descartes comme épichérème (i.e. un syllogisme étendu : majeure+preuves, mineure+preuves, et conclusion). Impossible donc de rendre la richesse de ce livre. On se centrera ici sur celui qui sert de support à la réflexion et l'analyse tout au long, Montaigne, dont il est donné un portrait nouveau et dérangeant en lien direct avec ce thème de la prudence.
