Abstract

Le ton est donné d'emblée avec quelques citations de Sidney Brenner, prix Nobel, Alain Prochiantz est un neurobiologiste, membre de l'académie des sciences, professeur émérite au Collège de France. En 1989, par accident (d'où le titre du livre ; mais comme toujours en science, cet « accident » n'en est pas tout à fait un -Valéry : « Chercher n'est que se mettre en état de trouver par quelque accident ou par quelque sommeil. C'est préparer le champ de l'heureuse étincelle. »), il fait une découverte qui va à l'encontre de tout ce qui est admis dans sa discipline. Il continue ses recherches dans une voie plus classique (« Il eut été suicidaire de ne pas tenir compte des réalités politiques institutionnelles » -op. cit., p. 69) mais, protégé par un professeur et administrateur du Collège de France, il lui est permis de poursuivre dans la direction la plus révolutionnaire, sans avoir à publier durant quelques années. Ceci, pense-t-il, ne serait plus possible aujourd'hui.
