Abstract

« Apocalypse managériale : une promenade à Manhattan de 1941 à 1946 puis au-delà » est un ouvrage écrit par François-Xavier de Vaujany, publié aux éditions Les Belles Lettres en février 2022. François-Xavier de Vaujany, professeur agrégé des Universités à l'Université Paris Dauphine-PSL et chercheur au sein de DRM (UMR CNRS 7080), est un spécialiste de l'histoire du management et des formes d'organisation du travail. François-Xavier de Vaujany explore dans cet ouvrage la relation entre le management et le digital, en faisant l'hypothèse que cette relation s'est nouée durant la seconde guerre mondiale, sur le sol américain. Cet ouvrage riche offre au lecteur à la fois une histoire du management et une généalogie du digital, dont les racines de la rencontre remontent, selon François-Xavier de Vaujany, aux années de mobilisation industrielle des États-Unis (de 1937 à 1945). Ces années de guerre, et leur prolongement avec la guerre froide, ont refondé le management scientifique en le réinventant autour du digital, dans le cadre d'une nouvelle géopolitique, largement américaine ; cette refondation du management s'est traduite, selon l'auteur, par le passage d'un capitalisme managérial de calcul à un capitalisme narratif fait de « machines désirantes ». Pour étayer cette thèse, cet ouvrage repose sur un intense et rigoureux travail de recherche initié en 2017, poursuivi dans le cadre d'une année sabbatique à l'Université de New York entre 2019 et 2020, combinant étude d'archives, entretiens d'experts, et ethnographie historique…
