Abstract

This paper explores socially responsible consumption practices motivated by status. Nineteen mixed interviews were conducted with socially responsible consumers. Thematic analysis revealed four status-motivated practices, rooted in a marketing and philosophical conceptual framework. This behavior, driven by a search for exclusivity, is akin to snobbery and shows that effort generates status. The communication of status is established through educational transmission and sharing and concerns the reduction of consumption.
