Abstract

The Paris 2024 surfing events are held in Teahupo'o in French Polynesia, 16,000 km from Paris. The choice of Teahupo'o, which was a promising choice from a sporting, symbolic and political point of view, has been questioned mainly due to environmental concerns. Using a qualitative approach, the aim of this chapter is to assess the difficulties encountered in organising and planning such a remote event. Our study reveals a lack of anticipation and transparency on the part of various public stakeholders. It also highlights the need to consider the social acceptability of hosting the surfing competition. Lastly, the study shows the extent to which the notion of the legacy of the Olympic Games is the result of a Western-centric vision.
