Abstract

The phenomenon of sufficiency – understood as a net reduction in production and consumption – has gradually spread into the discourse and practices of companies, public authorities and consumers, thus exemplifying the application of a ‘strong circularity'. We proceed to draw a genealogy of the phenomenon, in order to grasp its foundations and provide the depth needed to understand its current manifestation. Indeed, while the concept of sufficiency isn't new, its emergence is the subject of a continuously renewed debate. Using a Foucauldian approach to the phenomenon, we highlight a typology of power relations that can explain the emergence at different times of the phenomenon of sufficiency, and the correlation between this emergence and the decline of the dominant system against which it confronts itself.
