Abstract

This chapter focuses on the domain of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and highlights negative and positive externalities these technologies have for the environment and society. These negative externalities cover the myths related to the use of resources, travel, e-commerce and logistics, low consumption of electricity, and electronic waste. The positive externalities are evident in the sharing of information, dissemination of knowledge, new models of simulation and traceability, to name but few. This line of discussion is then externalized for the purposes of guiding future research endeavors in the fields of business and management, where the principles of ethics and responsible management of (new) technologies come into spotlight.
