Abstract

In just a few years, the circular economy has established itself in the public debate as the promise of a more sufficient growth model compatible with the challenges of an ecological transition. The current trend contrasts the circular economy, based on strategies for closing the loop of material and energy flows, with the linear economy based on the unlimited exploitation of natural resources and the landfilling of waste resulting from our unbridled consumption. This book discusses the dominant framing of the circular economy, presents the various imaginaries conveyed by the notion and analyzes the collective practices that are being deployed today on every continent. To this end, a variety of perspectives (historical, philosophical, geopolitical, sociological, managerial, economic, ecological, legal, prospective) are mobilized to shed light on contemporary debates. Starting with a historical analysis of practices and concepts, the book examines the issues and experiments involved in the circular economy: regulatory issues, territorial approaches to the emergence of new commons; relationships with technology and innovation, including through the creation of new imaginaries; sectoral models and practices. At the same time, this book highlights what is being invented in the field, and discusses the new conceptions of the circular economy that are emerging. Lastly, it examines the conditions under which the circular economy can become a reality.
