Abstract

This narrative review of the literature on emotional labor sets up a conversation between diverse theoretical focuses, disciplines, and research works (either well- or little-known) in order to propose a new narrative around this concept. We develop three streams: (1) emotional labor as an invisible but ubiquitous and potentially deleterious activity, (2) the shift towards a plurality of organizational frameworks, and (3) the forgotten dimensions of emotional labor. This leads us to present a synthesis of emotional labor in the form of a square.
