Abstract

Climate change is a great challenge for the ski industry and destinations. On the one hand, its consequences, including increased uncertainty regarding snow cover reliability, increases stakeholders' vulnerability. On the other hand, the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from destinations presents a new challenge. The consequences of the former have been widely studied, the latter have not. The issue of decarbonisation is even more central as it requires the activation of internal levers (e.g. reduction of emissions from the operation of infrastructure) and external levers (e.g. reduction of emissions linked to tourist travel). These plans must also be consistent with the reduction targets set by the countries concerned. Accordingly, the aim of this chapter is to present, compare and discuss the decarbonisation plans established by the main ski tourism operators in Switzerland and France.
