Abstract

In this article, we analyze the effects of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war on services producer prices in Mali. More specifically, we use the tools of descriptive and inferential statistics (coefficients of variation, comparison tests, and principal component analysis (PCA)) to infer the impact of these two shocks, in particular by analyzing the relationship between the producer price variables of services on the one hand, and on the other hand, between these variables and a number of macroeconomic and health indicators (inflation rate, interest rate, exchange rate, number of confirmed COVID-19 cases) on monthly data from 2017 to 2022.The results show that in addition to the effects of COVID-19, the effects of the Russia-Ukraine war on the producer prices of services are mainly through the channel of the inflation rate and the exchange rate. These effects of the Russia-Ukraine war mainly affect producer prices of education, information and communication services, as well as support and office services. On the other hand, the interest rate is a channel of transmission of the pandemic but over the medium and long term.
