Abstract

This article discusses methods to characterize online museum content audiences, referring to traditional methods of public studies and integrating digital tools. Rather than focusing on visitors for specific content, the authors focus on public reached by digital services that distribute content related of art, history and knowledge. The discussion is based on double research: one on the audiences of institutions' online exhibitions and the other on those reached by the creators of cultural content on digital platforms. Audience counters remain blind to sociodemographic characteristics and reception. Surveys concern either the whole population or practitioners specifically. Qualitative approaches must combine traditional interviews and uncertainties due to online activities. Hence, combining methods therefore remains necessary to understand the determinants of cultural activity in general and online contexts in particular.
