Abstract

This doctoral research explores the impact on the democratization of organizations from Massive Collective Intelligence Devices (MCID) relying on artificial intelligence (A.I.) technologies. These MCIDs present themselves as a means to democratize organizations by enabling employees to participate in strategic decision-making through dedicated tools. This doctoral project is positioned at the intersection of two different research streams. On the first side, we draw on the concept of deliberative democracy at the workplace illuminated by political philosophy. On the second side, we investigate the use of A.I.-enabled collective intelligence in organizations by using recent developments in management sciences. This research investigates whether - and under which conditions - such technological tools could enable businesses to act for society (Daniele et al., 2019). The approach is abductive, allowing frequent back-and-forth between the field and theoretical readings. The research relies on a qualitative methodology and unfolds in three distinct phases: 1) studying companies providing MCIDs; 2) tracking their implementation in several client organizations; 3) conducting an exploration among user-employees.
