Abstract

Walter Andrew Shewhart (1891-1967) est reconnu comme le fondateur du contrôle statistique de la qualité, défini comme « la science et l'art d'utiliser de manière économique les ressources matérielles et humaines pour produire des biens répondant aux besoins humains » (Mahalanobis 1948). Diplômé en statistiques et docteur en physique (1917), Shewhart a principalement travaillé aux Bell Telephone Laboratories, développant les principes du contrôle statistique de la qualité, détaillés dans son livre Economic Control of Quality of Manufactured Product (1931). Bien que ses travaux aient attiré l'attention des historiens du management, ils sont peu étudiés par les historiens de la pensée économique. Notamment, ses contributions économiques, comme ses articles dans le premier volume d'Econometrica (1933), sont souvent négligées. Par ailleurs, sa contribution à la création de l'Econometric Society a souvent été omise.
